FROM THE CLOSET TO A PLACE AT THE TABLE
1983 The Reagan Administration refuses to acknowledge publicly the rapidly developing AIDS crisis. Gay characters on TV are either flamboyantly queer, like Billy Crystal’s Jodie on Soap, or repeatedly dead, like each of Stephen Carrington’s lovers on Dynasty. The Women’s Movement distances itself from the lesbian and trans supporters in their ranks. The Supreme Court’s decision in Bowers v. Hardwick is still the law of the land. And the Harvard Gay & Lesbian Caucus is established to open a dialogue with the Harvard administration concerning discrimination on campus and adoption of a university-wide non-discrimination policy.
2008 On September 26-28, 2008, the Caucus will mark its
silver anniversary by holding the first ever
pan-Harvard LGBT celebration, featuring panels on
a range of political, cultural, historical, and scientific
topics, performances and film screenings, museum
visits, and the opportunity to interact with Harvard’s
diverse LGBT community. The weekend will provide an
opportunity to reflect on what has changed us, both at
Harvard and in the larger world, as well as to celebrate
the accomplishments of Harvard’s LGBT alumni,
students, faculty, and staff.
